From the city that gave us the likes of Joy Division, Morrissey and the Gallaghers, now emerges Young British Artists. With indie becoming more popular and dominant on the music scene, now is the time for indie bands to unleash their talent and these boys from Manchester have done just that.
In their new EP, Small Waves, Young British Artists present us a mix of sustained interludes, loud, percussion dominated music with fuzz layered over the top. Its this sound which is making them turn heads. The opener – Bring The Sun – is more of an instrumental, it highlights the bands musical talent. Singer Sebastian Mariner’s voice has some what of a Joy Division edge to it, he manages to stretch out words in the same way Ian Curtis was always able to. White Sheet is a messy explosion of percussion and guitars, cymbals steadily and continuously going in the background. Mariners voice adds to the softness of the song.
The other two songs, Ovation and Small Waves, are made up of the same components; airy synths and fuzz surrounding the music. The boys have both talent and ambition, a winning combination. However, with the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club around Young British Artists have competition and it’ll only be a matter of time before we see just how much talent they have: but I’m sure we won’t be disappointed.
