So, the other week, Fabio Capello and his men completed qualifying for next summer’s football World Cup in South Africa with a simple win over Croatia. And now the uninteresting bit (qualifying for the thing) is out of the way, we can look forward to the World Cup Finals, the best part of which, of course, are the football songs.
Embrace did the last official offering with the turgid World At Your Feet, and the Enemy are the first band to throw their hat into the ring, with lead singer Tom Clarke telling the Sun: “I’d like to get Peter Crouch to rap. We’d let him to his robot dance too. I reckon Wayne Rooney could be an angry rapper. We’d do it just so we could say, ‘We’ve recorded the official England song’.”
Valiant reasons indeed from the Coventry band…
Obviously a Three Lions re-re-re-re-release is inevitable and Keef Allen might be persuaded to reform Fat Les with Alex James of Blur, but who else might be in contention? Noel Gallagher might see it as an ideal opportunity to launch his solo career. Or Liam might get his remaining bandmates together and release something new as Oasis. Elbow know their way around a big chorus and could be tempted to give it a go.
Or there could be someone less obvious. Morrissey could put the murmurings of him being a racist to bed at last by becoming a figurehead for English football fans. Radiohead could do something typically uplifting and perfect for terrace-chanting. Girls Aloud could team up with Xenomania to record a pop opus that would blast away the opposition.
What would you like to see become England’s official World Cup song? Let us know below.

I heard the murmurings of Simon ‘hot for an oldie’ Cowell was in charge of it.
Personally, being Scottish I just hope England lose.

Morrissey would capture the longing and passion of wanting to win sooo desperately deliciously! Killing Joke would give us a tribal anthem that would be full of drive and roar ambition. Either of these two iconic musicians would be fantastic but I doubt we’d be that lucky. It would be great if it was from Elbow, Radiohead or Doves, but it will probably be something annoying from Take That or dare I say it, Cliff Richard! (I guess Smoking Popes don’t qualify?)

For me the choice is completely obvious. Re-release On The Ball by Ant and Dec. They could incorporate some of the Let’s Get Ready to Rhumble dance routine in the promo video… and Ant could do his silly rapping at the end… it would be epic.
Possibly most worrying is that I think I’m actually quite serious…..!!!!!

I’m the one one who has written ‘Come on Sing for England’. Search for it on youtube. I have no musical aspirations, and never set out to write a song. In difference to others then, it comes from the heart. What you get is a simple, catchy tune, that sticks in your head, but it is in need of proper professional arrangement. Should I rap the verse lines? Someone come forward, and offer to take the song to a commercial level. The song words say all that needs to be said.

North East duo Mark Hodgson and Martin White have produced and recorded ‘The Spirit of England’ – contender for World Cup Song 2010.A fantastic club dance song remixed in a tiny bedroom with fantastic catchy lyrics,a brilliant upbeat tempo along with added commentry and football chants this is destined to be the biggest football song since three lions. Londoners Young Stanley have announced the re-release of their 2006 song ‘Sing It For England’ – so could this be a North vs South challenge?
‘The Spirit of England’ premiered on Radio Teesdale (105.5 FM) on Tuesday 9 March at 6:45pm and is now available for airplay.
The single will be released on Mother’s Day (March 14th) and Mark and Martin hope to raise at least £500 by St. George’s Day (April 23rd) to be donated to Cancer Research and the Clique Local Charities.
Asked about the idea Mark said “The idea of the title ‘The Spirit of England’ is to try and lift the spirits of our nation as we are going through such a difficult time with the recession and rising unemployment. We would like the song give everyone the feeling of hope and belief and bring the Nation together as one and hopefully, come Sunday 11th July we will all be celebrating that England are World Cup Champions once again.”
The single will be available from March 14th in physical form and also via download from iTunes, Amazon and other online retailers.

I think you are all looking in the wrong direction.
There is a brand new 2010 song ready for April release called ” Let’s Hear It England ” which is just brilliant. It has been very professionally produced, and features all the top commentators who cover all the top matches including the World Cup,and has a very simple but catchy chorus, which once heard you will be humming in your head.
Watch out for it – it’s a winner.

Of the many songs that have surfaced, none have embraced the African vibe as this has,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOfhZXCoZPE
This original song is inspired by Mbube by Solomon Linda (Mbube is Zulu for Lion and also a type of African acapella singing) and was the first African song to sell 100,000 copies – It is the forerunner to The Lion Sleeps tonight(and later reworked as wimaweh)- The song draws the link to the 3 lions (a pride) with the line, “You will feel the pride of England, when you hear 3 lions roar”. Beginning with the African Style the song closes after some patriotic verses with a ‘sing off’ between “Mbube” and “England”

The song by Mykwela, ‘How I love you England’, has not only an authentic kwela (a type of ethnic-pop played in South Africa) feel to it, but the video is pretty funny. Check out the dance moves in the chorus!
