If you haven’t come across this spooky viral campaign yet here’s a quick intro. In early December a video was posted on Youtube by iamamiwhoami. This and the following 5 videos have shown a blonde woman, usually covered in mud, sporting preposterously long eyelashes and interacting with a natural environment – which usually looks like Nordic wood. This has caused huge speculation across the net about who it could be.
The latest video is simply called B, as opposed to a series of coded numbers like its predecessors. It is the closest there has been to a reveal; though the surreal singer is still fairly obscured being hermetically sealed for no apparent reason. We couldn’t resist a run down of all the main suspects for this whodunnit. First though, here’s the latest video.
iamamiwhoami – b from Real Google Bot on Vimeo.
Ok – some big names have been suggested.
Christina Aguilera: Rather improbably she was the most touted up until this last video, spurned on by suggestions that the nose and teeth were matches. Her bemused management has completely denied this. We can’t see it being the woman whose idea of edgy was “Beautiful”.
The Knife’s Karin Dreijer: Again, this idea gained some traction early on, but after seeing B this would be a real turn up. While the videos definitely have a sort of Swedish feel, the looks don’t seem to match even given the tricky camera work.
Goldfrapp – very doubtful. Alison Goldfrapp was recently so dismissive of the idea saying “if people want to say we’re behind that girl-licking-tree video, that’s fine”
Jonna Lee – This is by far the most likely candidate. Eagle eyed bloggers have spotted huge similarities between her eyes, nose and teeth that the wrapping couldn’t hide completely. What’s more the men who appear in B have more than a passing similarity to Jonna’s backing musicians (http://www.ihavesynth.com/blog/iamamiwhoami-claes-björklund-clip). The only problem is she is quite upbeat generally, even verging on happy-clappy sometimes. However, when we saw her singing MGMT’s electric feel it did start to make sense.
Now I have to admit – having seen the B video and this, things are starting to fall into place.
There’s one possibility that seems to have been left out of the discussion across the web though – that this is a completely new artist.

It would be totally bizarre for a record company to push such a clever and intricate viral campaign on to a completely unknown artist, without any sort of fanbase. It defeats the point of making people guess who it is, for one thing, and for another the production values of these videos are too high merely to take a punt on a new artist with. If it was, surely we would know about such a high-profile new signing. There are no obvious candidates of this sort.
Secondly, it seems quite obvious now that it is infact Jonna Lee. A pretty boring and anticlimatic outcome really. Still, I love that ‘b’ song. So the whole campaign has certainly been effective. For someone who had no idea who Jonna Lee was yesterday, her album is now top of my list. Well done all round.
I kinda wish it was Xtina though, it would be quite fabulously improbable. No doubt her actual forthcoming album will be full of the usual mainstream bollocks.

See what your saying, but loads of new artists come out with fairly impressive production.
Do think it’s Jonna Lee though.
