This Cardiff four-piece, with quite a mouthful for a band name, are set to release their second album entitled Love On An Oil Rig.
It’s a grand album, and the Victorian English Gentlemens Club have something quirky and loveable about their sound. The album starts off with the title track, which is quite short but very effective and takes you straight into the second song. Their lyrics jump out at you with style and intelligence, my favourite track being Bored In Belgium for that very reason. Parrot is a rather surreal one, it is the first single off the album, and clearly different from releases you’d usually hear.
The mix of male and female vocals works well throughout, but I have trouble describing their sound… it’s a bit poppy, experimental and down to earth. But they need more time to develop their sound and style and keep trying different angles to their music.
Even though they start off well with the album, it does starts to get a bit dull towards the end, something many bands fall victim to when they’ve run out of ideas. But there is one song that kind of saves it, which is Dog (a few tracks from the end) – it’s created really well and is enjoyable to listen to. But we’ll have to see how record-buyers rate this one, as it’s not going to be to everyone’s taste.
The whole feel to Love On An Oil Rig is quite simple in places, but not so simple that it loses important detail. That’s the best way.
