According to research by Nokia, Shakira has totted up more music downloads in the last year than any other Latino artist.

What is remarkable is that in Germany Shakira takes all ten positions in the most popular list, while in Austria and the UK the Columbian star accounts for nine out of the ten. Though Shakira is doing her best as an ambassador for South American music, the fact that most of the artists will seem obscure shows the genre is not quite managing to penetrate internationally, despite a huge fan base, in the same way as perhaps British or American music is. This is no doubt due to language – but the popularity of She Wolf has shown this is a barrier that can be overcome.
