There comes a time in every frontman’s career when he decides that it’d probably be better if he went off alone and expressed himself in a more creative environment. This is Rob Thomas’ second attempt since hiatus-ing from the multi-multi-million-selling Matchbox Twenty, and hopefully it’ll be the last.
His first half-decent effort did alright, probably based on his name alone, but this is unfortunately more of the same light pop-rock aimed at a pre-watershed audience of tweensters – but without the bounce his self-titled debut had.
It’s a shame, as Thomas tries to reinvigorate the down-and-dirty Matchbox days with tracks like Give Me The Meltdown and Wonderful. These, however, end up sounding like lacklustre Robert Palmer covers rather than serious pop-rock songs.
Hopefully this is the last solo effort we see from a singer who can be truly remarkable with the right song.
