Liverpool-based five-piece Sound Of Guns are a new band who are enjoying a bit of a flurry at the moment – their Myspace page carries kind words from several Radio 1 luminaries (Zane Lowe and Steve Lamacq are both fans), and they’ve even been on Soccer AM. If only for these reasons, they have to...
I’ve always looked at writing about music in a pretty straightforward way. My primary concern (read: singular) has always been stripping down the music in question to its must chaste essence, and try and hear if there is something, anything worth latching onto, either in regards to me, or in general. I just never saw...

The Strokes' front man Julian Casablancas releases his debut solo album Phrazes For The Young today, and you can listen to the full thing here thanks to Rough Trade.
There’s something ethereal in Animal Kingdom’s collection of twinkly, wistful pop-rock. Already getting rave reviews well before the release of Signs And Wonders, the South London four-piece are going places fast, even if they’re not releasing records at the same rate.
Johnny Foreigner have always liked it fast, but from the moment you press play on Grace And The Bigger Picture and the Brummie trio take you on a roller-coaster of summery nostalgic indie power-pop, it’s obvious that they have a new-found appreciation for the quieter, the slower, the little bit maturer.
The way the album ends sums it up perfectly. It's a vaguely interesting track. It meanders, but more prettily than most of the album. And then it just fades away. Into nothing. Poof! It's gone. Just like the rest of the album, it leaves no lasting impression.
