As NASA prepare to dismantle their space shuttle program they are still searching for the ideal soundtrack for the remaining launches.

The aim is to provide wake-up music and music that can be blasted in space. To these ends NASA are opening a public vote for the final days of the Space Shuttle Program with a choice of two wake-up songs for the STS-133 mission, which currently launching on Nov. 1. Nominees include songs by U2 (‘Beautiful Day’), Thomas Dolby’s ‘She Blinded Me With Science’ and the Clash (‘Should I Stay or Should I Go?’). The full list stretches to 40 artists from a variety of artists including ‘the Boss’ Bruce Springsteen.

But this is where it gets really exciting. NASA are offering average Joe’s the chance to have their music broadcast in the final frontier by submitting original music to their website. The two most suitable contributions will be chosen by a NASA panel for use as wake-up music on the STS-134 mission, which is set to blast off on 26th February 2011.

So if you’re prepared to go where no amateur song or tunesmith has gone before at least you’ll be safe in the knowledge that you have your place amongst the stars!
