MGMT have made a bold move by apologising for their new album. We presume this is a tongue in cheek move as here at TMM we think it’s great.

Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser said to The Guardian that the album is a radical departure from their commercially successful previous album and have declared it contains “no hits and no singles”, which was a huge commercial success and they were astonished Sony/Columbia let them do it. Ben said “We don’t understand why anyone let us do this. We’re both sorry.”, while Andrew added:

“They recognised that it was a bold move. Well, sorta…..They were happy that it was creatively… You know, we put time and effort into it and made something they were really proud of. At the same time, I think they were a little perplexed as to how to market it.”

This is not the first time MGMT have gone on record as regretting a release. After the disappointing release of Flash Delirium, Ben told Spinner:

When we first wrote that song we laughed so hard, Andrew [VanWyngarden] just reminded me of that — that we thought it was the funniest thing we’d ever heard. And then we got used to it, it started to sound more normal. It’s not a single, but we thought it was a good way to entice people to listen to the whole record. I’m sure there are plenty of people who think it’s completely weird and not what they were expecting. I’m sorry.

We’re pretty sure these music be done tongue in check….and possibly under some pressure from their label/record company.

If you want to see them live, Seatwave still has some tickets for thier UK tour available here.
