Introducing the X why – words courtesy of the band’s DJ/producer Gan Juan.

Who are you?
We are the X whY – electrofunkchic with a healthy dose of pop. Jnay supplies the vocal talents. Gan Juan cooks up the music out of broken synths and old records… and introducing our newest member, Dee. She’s got the moves, baby. We’re all from London. We’ve all got totally different beginnings and backgrounds, but we guess the point is that we’re here, now, together, pushing ahead to try and bring you the best music and the best shows we possibly can.

How did you come together?
Late 2008, and at the end of a heavy night, Gan Juan happened to stumble into a club in London’s Soho to see Jnay tearing up the stage with his solo show. That singer right there was going to be the frontman in his new band, decided Gan. Many drinks and a hazy recording session later the X whY was formed… well, almost. Dee joined a while later. An old friend of Jnay’s, she was too perfect for the X whY not to join. It just made sense.

What was your first gig like?
Terrible. All first gigs are terrible, right? It was in the same club the guys met. Everything went wrong: wrong introductions, wrong mixes, wrong songs for the night. It was a case of back to the drawing board. It’s taken a few months, but we’ve cracked it. We kick arse now – promise!

What plans do you have for the next six months?
It’s all about getting stuff out there and putting on some fantastic shows. We’ve got our first single dropping on 17 August. It’s called Down 2 Your Low and it’s being released on limited edition 12″ vinyl and download. We. Are. Very. Excited. After another single in October, we’re heading towards our album coming out early next year.

Other than records and shows, we’re going to be around and about, doing stuff like mixtapes, the odd DJ slot, trying to meet new fans… all that jazz.

How would you like the band to be remembered?
Tricky… We’ve talked it over and discovered this is the kind of question that we can’t answer honestly without sounding totally naff. So… err… we’re just going to leave it hanging!
