In the first of our new Introducing… series, we collar Citadels who have just released their debut single Golden Islands (reviewed as part of the singles club) on Friends Vs Records. Intrigued, we decided to find out more…
Who are you?
We are Citadels. A “glistening” five piece from London. Who’s in it? England, Sweden, Germany, Turkey, Scotland… and some undiscovered countries. Five of us sing, five of us play guitar, four of us play piano, three of us play synths, three of us play drums, two of us beat claves, one of us plays bass. We are Stef, Jim, Lucy, Chris, and Will. Nice to meet you. Can we play some Totopoly together? It’s like Monopoly but with race horses.
How did you come together?
Most of the band is from Worthing – it was pretty amazing in the late 19th century, a couple of us were alive then. We used to hang out with Wilde on the pier, not like that. Luce is from Barnet, gateway to the North, she’s a pretty big deal there. We found her on formingbands.co.uk. We then went through about 50 bass players ’till we found the Turk. He was playing double-bass for frankfurters on the streets of Byfleet so we took him in and so started our little family. We look after each other.
What was your first gig like?
It was at Mother Bar on Old Street – we smashed it, but gently and meaningfully – it was quite emotional – mostly for the bouncers. They weren’t ready for the fantasy pop floor tom juggling or drum stick warfare-heathens. Those were in the glory days of Mother Bar.
What plans do you have for the next six months?
Well we’ve done everything we want to do now so probably retirement? Bit of golf… Our debut single Golden Islands just came out and we’re just putting the finishing touches in to the second, big things. If we could condense the next six months into a time-lapsed bit of nature footage the flakes of egg would probably be bigger & better gigs, two kicking singles, loads of good press, an epiphany or two, a Heaven’s gate style fan cult, and some fishing… yeah we’d like do a tour of big game fishing spots in the States – then get everything we want for Christmas.
How would you like the band to be remembered?
Our legacy isn’t important. We’re entertainment, same as everyone else. How would we like to be remembered? In dappled sunlight, by a river, people eating Kallas Caviar, with Jimmy Page psyche light eyes.
