If it was surprising to learn, back in 2006, that Keane frontman Tom Chaplin was battling a serious chemical addiction, it’s more surprising to see that the band have bounced back so wilfully with ‘Spiralling’.

The knack for writing depressing, though thoroughly hummable, songs has not left them. Musically, we’re right back in 1984, arms of our suit jackets rammed purposefully above our elbows. So what’s new? Everyone’s doing the 80s thing these day. But where the Killers have polished back the rock to a high glitz, aiming at mimicry of style over musical emulation, Keane’s is a consummate revival – from the chorus backing vocals to the plinky-plonky tin pot drum kit. Cyndi Lauper could have picked the swampy synthesizer track and Madonna probably wrote the chord structure onto her bedroom mirror in red lipstick.

Chaplin belts it out, his personal problems adding an unfamiliar depth to the lyrics, at the expense of being totally at odds with the synth-glazed pash-party going on behind him. It ends up sounding like a paean to credit-crunch Britain –“yes, you’re enjoying yourselves, but it wont last!” – Chaplin seems to sing.

You will either dance, or cry. Probably at the same time.

  1. I’ve always secretly rather enjoyed Keane. I’m looking forward to hearing this ‘new sound’ of their’s. I saw them at Isle of Wight festival last summer and they were really, really good.

  2. I sent you an e-mail with the link mate - take a look!

  3. Keane’s debut album is great and they have written some goof songs but this is completely different. It’s horrible.

  4. Aye, seen it chum. Meant to listen the other day. Heard the Muse/Frank Skinner one. Loving that!

  5. I still don’t know what I think of this - I was quite partial to their old sound… This struck me as really weird, and I’m not sure if weird is good!

  6. I’m completely shocked that Steve’s just outed himself as a Keane fan. Likes Keane, doesn’t like Glasvegas.

Lost all respect for the man.

  7. Okay I have changed my mind about this song - I think I might like it now I’ve heard it a few times :)

Also more good news…I heard another track from their new album and it’s a lot more like their debut album. Keane still might be good after all.

    So a decent review :)

  8. It’s beyond awful.

It sounds like some dodgy version of a terrible mid-90s dance song.

  9. I’m actually a fan of this - it’s grown on me loads since day one and I’m looking forward to the album :-D I find myself humming it every now and again…

  10. Right that’s it. I’m off to form the next Test Icicles, you lot are off your collective rocker.

  11. is it just me - or is listening to keane vaguely tedious for other people?

  12. Now this is Q Magazine track of the year :) lol

    • Not quite “of the year” I feel! It’s good, but not that good.

It’s the best song on the album though, in my opinion. You can listen to the whole thing for free on last.fm.

      • Although I’ve listened a bit more and deduced that it isn’t. The album edit is a shame :-( Had they kept the radio edit, then yes :-)

  13. This is a great track! Perfect pop music. It seems to me that he is singing about his realationship with drugs.

  14. Sorry guys, but have to agree with Jamie on this one. I just don’t see the appeal whatsoever. Though they do get a feather in the cap for making something slightly more interesting than there watch paint dry debut.
