I want to like Dan Black, I really do. When his Rhianna-sampling, Notorious BIG cover HYPNTZ started doing the rounds it felt like he’d be on to something great. Sadly the late rapper’s estate stepped in and stopped him using the lyrics, meaning that opening ((Un)) instead is Symphonies – the same song but with different words. This kicks things off badly.
Black redeems himself slightly on the album’s stronger tracks – namely Alone, Yours, and I Love Life – however doesn’t have enough ideas to fill a whole album. Songs fall flat halfway through and he resorts to at least 20 or 30 seconds of repetition at times in order to pad things out.
And it really is a shame. His previous output, as part of indie band the Servant, was excellent, but this just is too weak to be remembered for long. It’s not all bad, but not enough of it is good to make up for that.

Alone is a choon but the album has ‘forgotten by August’ stamped all over it. Shame.
