Semantics stay away, for any assumptions that Cosmo Jarvis is a space-aged florescent adolescent should be banished. Real name Harrison Cosmo Krikoryan Jarvis (yes, Cosmo is part of his name), the 18-year-old singer-songwriter recently showed his face over here when he supported Gabriella Cilmi on tour, and now his debut double album, separately titled Humasyouhitch and Sonofabitch, reflect a duality in the young scamp’s rise to prominence.
She’s On You is typical lad-indie (Ed: lindie?), boasting summer strumming strings and a recorder choir that will knock your socks off. Meanwhile, Jessica Alba’s Number is filled with Eminem/Asher Roth inspired lyrics, with Jarvis yearning to take Britney Spears to the movies, his cackling keen hiding a creepy underside. “She’d say hit me baby one more time / Nn way Britney, domestic violence is a crime” he says. This is the thing with Cosmo Jarvis – he has a lot of fun being an 18-year-old scamp and couldn’t care about any pretentious crap. He’s a glamour-less, cheeky little rogue (think Jack Penaté going off the rails at boarding school) but also manages to show a lot of depth on his debut, particularly on the darker of the two discs, Sonofabitch.
It is here that the initial concept of Jarvis is lifted; he’s not an ASBO-infected idiot who masturbates while writing his songs. And while the often-explored themes of alcoholism, divorces and messed up childhoods can wear a bit thin (Mike Skinner, Mike Skinner, Mike Skinner, we’re fully aware you are without a silver spoon in your mouth. Put the drugs away, Mike), Jarvis delivers songs such as Mum’s Been Drinking and Clean My Room with a hint of gritty authenticity, instead of Asher Roth’s candy-filled suburban childhood.
Both discs powerfully deploy the true scope of Cosmo Jarvis’ fun-fuelled youth; an excellent start to a truly promising career.
