Johnny Rodgers applied to transfer to Western Michigan University in order to meet and possibly sing with one of his heroes, Mel Torme. He got in, met and sang with Torme.
He literally stalked producer, Richard Barone by researching his schedule and popping up everywhere Barone landed with a cheery hello, until he made a connection. Barone produced his CDs. Rodgers wrote a song with Fred Ebb. Demonstrating Ebb’s reaction when he felt something was under par, he crumpled to the floor like a robotic leaf with an expression on his face I can only call ironic ouch. Liza Minnelli, whom he met at one of Ebb’s Christmas parties, took him on the road as a singer, dancer, and occasional accompanist. “Honey, watch my ass for the tempo,” she commanded…
Johnny Rodgers is collaborating on two musicals, has written and arranged award winning songs, and accompanied noted cabaret singers. The Johnny Rodgers Band performs the pants off most of today’s performers with unabashedly sentimental, sassy, cool, affecting and increasingly interactive programs-think Billy Joel, James Taylor. The quartet just got back from a month in the Pacific Islands as ambassadors-at-large for the program Rhythm Road-American Music Abroad.
