Parents have complained to TMM that Cheryl Cole’s album 3 Words should have a parental guidance sticker on its cover to warn of the swearing contained in some of the songs.
Cole’s hit Heartbreaker with Black Eyed Peas rapper will.i.am contains the phrase “fucking jerk” and on Make Me Cry Cole complains “I can’t take this shit much more”.
Usually when albums contain bad language a sticker warning of the adult content, but 3 Words does not. Nothing is mentioned about explicit content if you buy the album online from play.com, although iTunes does warn of the explicit content and clean versions are available. When we checked at our local HMV store there was no warning on the CD there either.
Worried parent Ty Hayward contacted us to express their dissatisfaction with Cole and her record label Fascination’s efforts to make sure parents are aware of the bad language.
Hayward said: “I was very disappointed to hear that Mrs Cole seems to think that swearing is ‘cool’ and perhaps even ‘credible’.
“I will be returning the copy I bought for my 10 year daughter’s birthday, because I think this CD should contain some sort of sticker at least, warning of ‘words of an adult nature’, or similar, stuck on the front of each CD, so at least we the buyer has a chance to decide for ourselves whether to purchase or not before any young kids discover these words for themselves.
”What a sad day it is when Cheryl Cole, who is the country’s most idolised woman by many young girls, sends out the message that swearing is ‘cool’. Does she have an IQ problem? Or is she truly that naive? We have Christmas approaching. This CD will be bought for many young girls as presents – how awful to think some will have learnt to say “shit” and “f*ck” by Boxing Day.”
TMM spoke to mother-of-two Tonie Jascourt who very helpfully asked around some fellow parents for their thoughts.
Tonie told us: “A friend who has an 11 year old son was shocked and absolutely furious when I told her that there is a small amount of light swearing on this album. She had planned to buy the CD for her son this Christmas, and now she won’t.
“There’s plenty of time for her son to hear swearing in his life, and she doesn’t think buying a CD, knowing now that it contains swearing, would be responsible. She was equally angry at Cheryl Cole for swearing – referring to Cheryl’s mentoring role, and how she is looked up to by loads of kids – and at the record label for not giving parental warning.
“Another friend was appalled when I said that there is even the lightest of swearing on 3 Words. She is simply refusing to buy the album now that she knows this, having originally intended to do so. She has two girls, 12 and nine. She said that it’s the reason she hates rap music, why can’t people sing or speak without resorting to swearing? And for Cheryl Cole to be doing the same, albeit in a much more diluted form, is incredibly annoying for her.
“She is even more bothered by the record label’s irresponsible behaviour at not putting a parental warning. Had she bought the album, she’d have taken it straight back to the shop for a refund, and made a written complaint to the store and record label.”
A spokesperson from Fascination, Cheryl Cole’s record label, said: “I’ve been assured that the content of this album does not require a parental advisory sticker.
“If you do feel the album isn’t suitable for your daughter, please do return it and let me know if you have any trouble with the retailer.”
What do you think? Should 3 Words have a parental advisory sticker? Should Cole be more responsible as a role model for children? Let us know below.

Part of the reason this album may not have a parental guidance sticker on it, may be because the line “f*cking jerk” does not exist in the album version of heartbreaker. I have only ever heard it used in a live performance by Cheryl and Will.i.am.
I would suggest listening to your album version of Heartbreaker and fast forwarding it to around 1.43 and having a listen through to the non existant swearing. They have blanked it out especially for the purpose of producing a more clean album.
I can’t deny that “i can’t take this shit much more” exists in the song, Make Me Cry.. although i’m not sure there is even a track called “trying to make me cry” as you claim.
I do think you should actually listen to the album tracks and see for yourselves whether there are these swear words you claim before writing what has now turned out to be a trashy irrelevant article.
Thanks for your time :]

Yo Charlie, we’ve corrected the track name, cheers.
We’re just presenting the concerns of parents that have been brought to our attention. No need to get so passive-aggressive about it.

Am not getting aggressive about it, I’m just saying that before ripping apart Cheryl and her album, it may have been nice to check the facts, i.e whether it actually contained the swearing the article is based on.

Can I just point out that this isn’t a “OMG why iz she swearing?!” article, nor moral outrage on the website’s behalf.
Instead, it’s simply relating to the fact that there’s no parental advisory sticker on the album – when it does feature swearing. Admittedly it’s not going to bring about a 2012 style apocalypse (and Charlie, we did listen to both songs carefully before going ahead with this – the intent is still there), but what we’re wondering is did the label deliberately avoid putting any kind of sticker on to boost sales? Parents would possibly have been put off buying the album for their young children, and maybe that’s a risk they didn’t want to take.
None of the above is meant as a judgement, mainly an impartial look at an issue which was brought to our attention just before the weekend.

Unfortunately most 10/11 year olds hear worse than the one swearword on Cheryl’s album every day in the school playground!
Although their parents may be shocked, it’s more than likely their kids won’t be that fussed!
Fair enough, maybe the label should have put an advisory sticker on the album, i’m sure they checked if the one word required a PA sticker before they released it.
But why hate on Cheryl – “Does she have an IQ problem? Or is she truly that naive?”, a bit harsh no?
If their kids are Cheryl fans then they will know she has always sworn, on many TV shows/interviews/Girls Aloud DVD’s in the past, that’s part of the reason why people like her so much, cos she’s normal like us, she doesn’t claim to be perfect!
And if swearing affects your intelligence, God help Gordon Ramsay!!
iHEARTcheryl

Shes only normal! Shes allowed to swear if she wants! Her songs represent her feelings and if her feelings have the need to swear she should be allowed!
In Heartbreaker (album version) she doesnt even swear. And in Make me cry she says it once. Im sure that parents have swore infront of their kids before, if not theyve heard it on the tv. So whats the big deal about?
And anyway, Kids dont listen to the words anyway just the tune!
jeeez! I love Cheryl and I wouldnt change anything about her album! Its amazing!

ONE swear word…is that worth a whole article hating on Cheryl?
I think not.
Maybe some parents don’t like hearing one swear word..but the chances of the child already having heard that word is way higher than them coping Cheryl singing it, is it not?
I wouldn’t stick a parental advisory sticker on an album cover, just because of one word. It’s a bit silly.

Oh my life. Seriously, does no-one realise that Cheryl Cole is an IDIOT?!?!?!?!
Her music is, lets face it, pretty damn deplorable. It’s a sad day when she swears as it is blatantly her attempt to fit in with the ‘cool kids’ and boost her sales. What a let down. Just stick to making the good old structured pop music that portrays no real message except for the same old boring ‘love’ story/ heartbreak that’s been said again and again by many a rubbish singer.
As the least talented member of Girls Aloud, I fear for the sake of music history that she is what is being worshipped as a music legend. It’s just a shame that she’s such a household name that won’t be forgotten soon enough. If i had kids this tripe would be banned.
‘Does she have an IQ problem? Or is she truly that naive?’ may not be very relevant questions; what should be asked is ‘does she really think she can sing?’ and ‘don’t we want more for our kids than some irrelevant message that they’re too young to truely understand?’

What I don’t like about this article is how you present a case about apparent swearing and lack of a warning sticker, but you end up making cheap potshots about the quality of the music on the album (i.e. the joke stickers you’ve come up with) which is wholly unrelated to the point you’re trying to bring to our attention.
Katie. S
It’s not unrelated, it’s called humour, it’s farsical: adding something to the topic at hand. I’m sure if you really think about it you’ll see that the joke stickers aren’t necessarily a dig at her music (although I whole-heartedly agree with the comments) more so a dig at her incompetence…i mean incompetent record label, who couldn’t be bothered with warning labels. Blatantly to sell more records, screw the ears and minds of the innocent children!

Kids aren’t stupid. Just because they hear cheryl swear once doesn’t mean they have to become horribly foul-mouthed, if they do its their own decision. Besides, I bet they’ve heard their own parents swear more than once.

That isn’t the debate though – the debate is whether the CD should warn parents of the swearing so they can decide for themselves whether to let their kids listen to it. It’s not being given the choice that has riled the parents we spoke to.
Tonie

This isn’t a review of the album, nor a personal attack on CC, as some people have taken it to be. Relax!!!!! It’s an article voicing a legitimate concern that the record label didn’t see fit to warn parents about the language content within the album. It doesn’t matter if it’s hard swearing or just a couple of light swear words. To a parent of young kids, swearing is swearing, and they don’t want their children to hear it. They are undeniably entitled to that opinion, and every record label, not just Cheryl’s, has a responsibility to respect that.
True, there’s nothing you can do to control the language that your kids hear in the playground, but you should be able to control what they listen to in the home. And for many parents, a parental guidance sticker is exactly what’s needed to give them the info they need when buying cd’s/dvd’s for their children.
And to the writers who said that Cheryl Cole is not for young children. What nonsense. Had there been parental advice on the cd, then maybe, by process of deselection in the record store, the lower age of her target audience would be raised. But there isn’t, so it’s open season for every growing person who likes music to be given her cd for Christmas. Every time she appears on X Factor, she is setting herself up as a positive role model for kids of all ages. She should have either avoided using the swear words, or the label should have warned parent shoppers. Simple. There can be no further argument.
And all those sorry individuals who think the article was bashing Cheryl completely missed the point of the debate.

Oh My Gosh. I really think its stupid if i am honest, if Cheryl wants to put feeling into her songs then she should be able to, even if there are a few swear words in it :L There are a LOT of album out with swear words in them why is noone complaining about them? Most songs nowadays have unsuitable words in them!
I’m saying this and incase people are wondering no im not a massive Cheryl fan or anything, but yeah i think shes good and im backing her all the way tbh!

I don’t know why these parents are blaming Cheryl. In reality it is not up to her if she wants to put a parental advisory sticker on the CD’s. Blame the record company not her, it is not her call even if she wanted to. People have this idea that the artist is 100% in control when it is so not true. The record exects control the finished product.
Also, the Album version of HeartBreaker does not use the F- word, it is blocked out.
Stop blaming her, blame the record company people.

To be honest i think this is a absolutely awful article; for a start these so called parents need to get with reality, unless theyre kids are wrapped up in cotton wool they’ll of heard a lot worse language than this. As for all the role model stuff, cheryl cant cater for everyone its impossible to please all of society today as its obvious people are too up themselves too politically correct to much of idiots, no ones perfect if she wants to swear let her .. everyone swears whether you admit it or not, its just that she’s in the public eye therefore everyone jumps on her for the slightest thing (well her fans (me) dont, but immature politically correct people like you do) If she went to mcdonalds or something itd be ” omgggg cheryls the reason people are fat shes advertising mcdonalds.” Its pathetic and rather unfair. I think you all need to take a good look at yourselfs before you critisise others, none of you are perfect half of the people commenting and most people couldnt sing like her, if she couldnt sing she wouldnt be one fifth of the worlds biggest girlband? she wouldnt of sold 20 consecutive top ten hits and she certainly wouldnt have a solo platinum album now would she? Look at amy winehouse, pete doherty etc. There on drugs they do it in front of papz knowing there photographed, .. Why pick on cheryl? It makes no sense shes amazing and i for one look up to0 her i think shes amazing. People need to get lifes if you have nothing nice to say dont say it. LOVEYACHEZ! <333333333333333333333

I have to say that i think it is an outrage that parent assume that celebrities are responsible for teaching there children naughty words.
My son is 5 years old and since he was as young as 2, he has been aware of every explitive going and he knows not to say them, even though he hears these words all the time around him.
So I beg to differ with everything this article is trying to achieve and can only say, if your kids like cheryl, then buy them the album. If you have been a good enough parent, then your kid will not repeat the 2 naughty words on the album.
Cheryl is an adult and should be free to express herself in anyway she likes, that goes for every adult on this earth !!!!
Thank you.

Needed a sticker. Irrelevant whether she swears or not. Irrelevant as to whether she’s to blame. Irrelevant as to whether children know these words already. Let down on the marketing side, which should have made it clear that an album was explicit. That’s part of their job, they failed it. It’s not important whether or not this was necessary; in the current climate it was expected.
Incidentally, for anyone who REALLY wants to get on their moral-horse should probably check out this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AXUJFBqgYE – some might consider it a little bit worse than Cheryl’s “shit”. So to speak.

This is a good article, and has lots of merit. I’m sick of all these idiot kids on here whining about “kids are going to hear those words anyways” and “if you don’t like it don’t buy the album” crap. Apparently these types of comments are meant to defend someone that they really don’t know … and not to discuss what the article is really about.
First, the article is about the album not being labeled properly. FACT: album contains at least 1 swear word that is inappropriate for children to hear. The fact that kids hear these words all day long doesn’t change this fact. If my child wants an album from some singer that I don’t know, at least I should be able to assume that if that album DOES NOT have that PA sticker, my child won’t be listening to words that are deemed inappropriate. This album is suppose to have that sticker, and that is why these parents are outraged.
Second, the fact that this singer is a roll model for kids … whether that is the intent or not … she has the responsibility to either change her image in the public light, or maintain kid-friendly music. Do you think if Sesame Street started using “shit” or “fuck” in their programming parents wouldn’t be going nuts over that?!? Maybe its the fault of Cheryl’s publicist or manager in why she’s deemed “kid-friendly”, but if she wants to be more “adult”, then she needs to change her target audience.
It really saddens me that all of you on here, whether your 12 year olds or not, are so irresponsible with the fragile upbringing of children. It seems that if you all had your way we should remove all barriers of sex, language, and violence from our homes, and steal children of their innocence. Children are easily shaped by what they take in. So what if a 10 year old hears “shit” all day long at school. As much as a parent can try to teach a child not to say those words, the more that child hears it the more he/she is likely to think its ok to say. Its just the way it is. Monkey see, monkey do. At least responsible parents try to limit the exposure as much as possible.
AmazedAtTheseIdiotKids
Sometimes being a good enough parent isn’t enough. Kids repeat what they take in regardless of upbringing … its the way we’re all wired. Your kid doesn’t repeat the words he hears, thats great. But for the other 95% of kids out there with well-meaning parents that are trying to limit that exposure, the sticker is a must.
Cheryl is an adult, and she is free to express herself in any way she likes … but I don’t want to hear it, and I sure don’t want my kids hearing it. This article is about giving the parents the ability to choose whether the album is appropriate for their kids … and not about limiting free speech. As far as I’m concerned, her album is false advertising, and I think all *responsible* parents that bought that album should sue her.
Lisa Morley
OK, to all the idiots out there blabbing on about false advertising etc …. get a life … if my son who is 5 yrs old wanted the rage against the machine single I would buy him it, my son does not swear, that is because I have brought him up properly … this country would be in a far better state if people took responisibility for there own actions and stopped blaming anything else they can put there hands on to divert from the obvious!! That they are lazy parents who refuse to put the leg work in to make sure that there kids are well educated. My son also has the Black eyed peas album, which has a fair few swear words and lyrics of a sexual nature, he does not then go to school and repeat them, so please parents …. educate your children as to what is acceptable and what is not and stop expecting everyone else to do it for you! You people frustrate me soooo much!!!
