This collection represents punk rock at its punkest – raucous, exciting and deliberately rough around the edges. Do try this at home.
I’m no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but as far as I’m aware, rapping is supposed to be a clever mixture of staccato yet fluent speech to some form of a tune. This didn’t quite constitute rapping, it was more sort of reading aloud.
The ever wandering Mark Lanegan has his muse and may eventually rest his boots - but for now, Isobel Campbell is drawing the best out of him, whenever and wherever they meet.
While this unconventional instrumentation could be enough to get them noticed, it’s their grasp of song-writing and performance that really warrants attention.
It’s no masterpiece.
A collection of widely accessible, soothing tracks. It’s just a shame it feels like it’s all been done before.
It’s certainly a step in the right direction.
This engaging EP combines elements of jazz, rock, pop and metal but refuses to be bound by the rhythms, scales and structures of any of them.
I’m convinced they’re capable of so much more than what’s on this EP - I just want to hear them make music that doesn’t make me want to throw myself off the nearest tall building.
