In 2009 it seemed Boy George had become irreversibly assigned the status of caricature; a camp 80s hangover jailed “false imprisonment” of a male escort and ending up as the world’s most famous street sweeper. The details are well known, but the accusations that the incident went beyond the consensual never quite chimed with the genuinely sensitive and affable persona Boy George portrays in interviews.
In 2010 though it looks like his coverage will be more about music. Amazing Grace, released today, is of the catchy spiritual dance anthem, with Portuguese singer Ana Lains providing some extra atmosphere.
The video is a bit of a strange one; just George’s disembodied head, complete with trademark hat, floating about between weeping guitars, Hindu gods and other trippy images – the most trippy of all being Jade Goody at 3:01.
Though it’s doubtful it will do for him what “Outside” did for George Michael, and though the song you hear in a club will probably be one of fifty bargain basement remixes, it should lend him a bit more credibility than he started the year with.
