Baxter are a London-based five-piece who play melodic indie pop, and in this collection, they showcase their sound in four easy pieces.
The title track comes first, and with its blend of mellow guitars and the honey-coated voice of frontman Jamie Tinkler, sets the tone for the collection. Cue the muted heavenly harmonies, Snow Patrol-style dynamics, softly insistent cymbals – altogether, it’s a lovely sound, but is it really going anywhere?
The single, Standing On The Edge Of The Tide, comes next, and confirms the first impression that, while beautifully done, this EP has little to offer that’s really different. Here is another not very strong song made thoroughly listenable by pretty instrumental work and ear-friendly vocals. Ditto the third track, Something’s Got To Give.
The EP closes with Avenue, a song that apparently references the boyband of the same name of which Jamie was once a part. This track does at least go somewhere slightly different musically, with a welcome hint of the Spector sound so successfully revived by Glasvegas, but it still lacks much memorability on its own account.
All in all, the collection is best seen as background – a great accompaniment to whatever you’re doing, but with very little about it to stop you in your tracks.
